1 For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. 3 Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people. 4 And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was. (Hebrews 5: 1-4) ESV
1. Congregation to pastor
a) Respect pastor’s calling
1 For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. (Hebrews 5: 1) ESV
8 And the LORD spoke to Aaron, saying, 9 “Drink no wine or strong drink, you or your sons with you, when you go into the tent of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations. 10 You are to distinguish between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean, 11 and you are to teach the people of Israel all the statutes that the LORD has spoken to them by Moses.” (Levites 10: 8-11) ESV
Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. (1 Peter 5: 17) ESV
b) Be sympathetic to pastor’s weaknesses
2 He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. (Hebrews 5: 2) ESV
2. Pastor to congregation
a) Take the lead in the pursuit of holiness
Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people. (Hebrews 5: 3) ESV
- Cherish the heavenly ministry
And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was. (Hebrews 5: 4) ESV
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. (1 Peter 2: 9) ESV
