From collecting money to dispersing money

Rev. Abraham Chiu

1 He entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. 3 And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature. 4 So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. 5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” (Luke 19:1-5) ESV

1. Life changes from confusion to solidity

6 So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully… 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” (Luke 19: 6, 9-10) ESV

2. The soul changes from poverty to abundance

And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” (Luke 19: 8) ESV

Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ. (Philippians 3: 8) ESV

As sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything. (2 Corinthians 6: 10) ESV

3. Life changes from gathering to giving

And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” (Luke 19: 8) ESV

You shall give to him freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him, because for this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake. (Deuteronomy 15: 10) ESV

Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” (Luke 6:38) ESV

Reflections and Discussion:

  1. What do you think is the greatest guarantee for your life? What do you need to do to consolidate this protection?
  2. Do you think what you are currently pursuing can make your life more fulfilling and happy?
  3. What could be the reason why Zacchaeus was so eager to see Jesus? Why was Jesus so happy and excited when he said he would stay in his home?
  4. Why do you think Zacchaeus changed so much after meeting Jesus?
  5. What do you think you need most in your life, life, and soul?
