Rebuilding a Holy Church
Pastor Gideon Lee 1/11/2026 Ephesians 2:19-22
Therefore you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In Christ Jesus, the entire structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. (2:19-22)
Holiness and unity describe two aspects of the same reality. The English word “holy” comes from “wholly,” meaning complete, without cracks or deficiencies. When the church is holy, it will be united.
The Saints Who Build the Kingdom (19)
- To become saints means we are no longer outsiders or sojourners; we are fellow citizens of the saints and members of God’s household. (2:11-13)
- “Outsiders” carries negative connotations (4:17-20)
- “Saints” is simply another name for believers. (1:1)
- Jesus commanded us to make disciples of all nations (Great Commission).
- Becoming a disciple must include proclaiming the gospel to others.
- Discipleship should begin around ages 2-3.
Built on the foundation of Scripture (20)
- Scripture was written by apostles and prophets.
- The foundation of the apostles and prophets is Scripture. The center of Scripture, Jesus Christ, is the cornerstone of this foundation.
- Revelation was unfolded progressively. What was hidden in the Old Testament—that not only Jews but also Gentiles could become saints through Christ—was revealed gradually. (3:5-6)
- Paul was originally a Jew of the Jews. Paul sought to become a mediator between Jews and Gentiles. (3:8)
- Different strategies are needed to make Jews and Gentiles into believers.
- Many raised in Christian culture can only be seen as disciples. They have not truly become believers or saints.
Building the Temple (21)
- Paul’s mission was to help Jews and Gentiles become one family. (2:21)
- Even when working together with division of labor, the ultimate goal remains the same. All believers are to be united in faith and in the true knowledge of God’s Son. (4:11-13)
- Achieving unity in the faith is not merely the work of theologians in seminaries, but the work of saints in local churches and small groups. (4:14)
- A church in a postmodern multicultural context is tempted to avoid discussing absolute biblical truth. Today, we see many churches doing precisely the opposite. They draw boundaries, no longer to delineate doctrinal differences, but purely to carve out a cultural identity. Or, with a market-competition mindset, they carve out a market niche for themselves—a so-called selling point.
Building by the Spirit (22)
- Ultimately, it is not our wisdom or methods that build the church and unite it in the Lord, but God Himself.
- Without the power of the Holy Spirit, that unified temple cannot be built.
- Without the power of the Holy Spirit, ministries cannot work in concert, nor can they grasp a common truth. They are merely a pile of rubble stacked together.
Discussion Questions
- What does it mean for a local church to become holy? Does it mean not touching the world?
- How do we not fall into the trap of becoming secularized?
- Why is it important to have an evangelistic component in discipleship?
- What could be the practical differences between reaching out people who have no Christian religious experience and those who grow up in church?
