A Family Letter to Joy

Philippians 4:4-6 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Pastor Lee Yip-kee 11/23/2025

  • When we think of the Thanksgiving holiday, what do we think of?
    • Black Friday
    • Travel and return home
    • Family
  • Two passages
    • Rejoice in the Lord always. I say again, rejoice. 5Let all know your humble heart. The Lord is near. 6 Have no anxious things, but in all things by prayer, supplication, and thanksgiving, tell God what you want. (Philippians 4:4-6).
    • Rejoice always, 17pray without ceasing, 18give thanks in all things, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).
  • Sermon in three points
    • Explain these 3 commands: Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in all things.
    • What to be joyful and thankful about?
    • How can we rejoice and be grateful in the difficult days ahead? Why?
  • What to do? 3 commands
    • Rejoice in the Lord always:
      • The more you know Christ, the more joy you will have. (Philippians 3:1, 4:10, 1:25).
      • Joy is the fruit of the Holy Spirit. (Galatians 5:22).
      • The knowledge of Christ is experiential knowledge
    • Difficult circumstances—which may not be as happy in themselves—may motivate us to pray more
    • We can be thankful for future things
    • Practice
      • 1 Colossians 3:16-17 – There cannot be just one person
      • ETS worship of the mind
      • Hosting Thanksgiving dinner for international students
      • Thanksgiving is a great opportunity to greet some students at CCA
      • Friends have a breath of soulmates.
  • What to be joyful and thankful about? Family.
    • You are my joy. (Philippians 4:1, 2:19, 1:3, 1 Thessalonians 2:19).
    • You are in my prayers. (1 Thessalonians 1:2).
    • I thank God for you. (1 Thessalonians 3:9, Romans 1:8, 1 Corinthians 1:4, Ephesians 1:15-16, Colossians 1:3-4).
  • How can we rejoice and be thankful in those difficult days?
    • The enemy opposes God only to fulfill God’s purpose (Philippians 1:12-19).
    • Standing firm in the face of attack is an assurance of salvation (Philippians 1:28-29).
    • Both poverty and abundance give opportunity to learn to trust in God’s power (Philippians 4:10-14).

Discussion

  • Think of ways you can put into practice being joyful and thankful in prayer.
  • Who makes you joyful? Who are you thankful for?
  • Why is it more difficult for the rich to trust in God’s power? What could the rich do?
